V60 Pour Over | Scale | Gooseneck Kettle | Grinder | Timer | Coffee

Ahhh the famous pour over brew method. Used around the world to extract a perfect single cup of coffee. Some consider this to be best brew method.  Most importantly, enjoy this pour over brew method as it can become a nice morning ritual, like meditation. The pour over method can seem intimidating at first, but don’t worry we will walk you through step by step.

Hario V60, Porlex Grinder, Goose-neck Kettle

Step 1 – Boil Water

We will be using a 1:16 ratio. That is 1g of Coffee to 16g of water (1g = 1ml of water). We will use 18g of our Kenya Nyeri coffee, which means we will need 288g of water. Boil at least 350ml around 90°C to 94°C.

Step 2 – Grind Coffee Beans

Weigh out 18g of coffee. Grind the coffee so it looks like sea salt. We are using a Porlex Mini Manual grinder. Our setting is around 9 clicks, but mess around and try 8 or 10 and see what works for you.

Hario V60 with Coffee

Step 3 – Pre-heat the Hario V60

Take your Hario V60 (or other pour over device) and insert the filter. Then with the extra boiled water, wet the entire filter and pre-heat the V60.

Step 4 – Prepare Area

Remove the water you just poured and add the coffee to the filter. Even out the coffee by tapping the V60. Place the setup on your scale, get your timer ready on your phone or watch. Add the hot water that was boiled to your goose neck kettle.

Step 5 – First Pour

Pour water over the coffee so that all the grounds are saturated up to 36g. We double the weight of how much grounds we put in: 18×2=36. Then wait 40 seconds to allow the coffee to bloom.

Step 6 – Second Pour

Start at the center and gently start pouring in a spiral motion in the same motion of the V60 (clockwise usually). Pour until you reach 100g before the 1 minute mark. The coffee should have a nice spiral effect that helps stir the coffee for even extraction.

Step 7 – Third Pour

Pour up to 200g by the 1 minute 30 second mark. Same as before.

Step 8 – Final pour

Finish up to 288g by the 2 minute mark. After this watch your clock and typically if your grind is set right it should finish around 2:45 to 3:00 minutes. 

Step 9 – Finishing Touch

Remove the filter and pour over and stir your coffee just a little to make sure everything is even. You should have about 2 cups worth of coffee.

Step 10 – Enjoy

Drink your coffee, enjoy that professionally made cup. Experiment further with different ratios and grind settings to get the best flavors out of your coffee.
